Gears and screws

The part between the motor and the limb decides how strong, precise, safe and cheap a joint is, and it's where the supply chain pinches hardest.

22 min read6 figuresas of Sep 2026

A robot motor spins fast and pushes weakly. A robot joint has to move slowly and push hard. The reducer between them trades one for the other, and in a humanoid that trade is worth more money than the motor itself: about 36% of a rotary joint's cost is the gearbox and about 64% of a linear joint's cost is the screw estimate. Learn the five mechanisms on this page and you can read any joint spec sheet in Shenzhen and know what the maker chose to be good at.

Why a joint needs a gearbox

An electric motor makes power, and power is torque times speed. A small motor of the kind that fits inside an elbow makes its power as speed: thousands of revolutions per minute at a torque you could stop with your fingers. An elbow lifting a 5 kg box needs the opposite, a few revolutions per minute at a torque that would snap your wrist. A gear pair converts one into the other. If a small gear with 12 teeth drives a big gear with 48 teeth, the big gear turns once for every four turns of the small one, and it pushes four times as hard, minus friction.

That multiplier is the gear ratio. Here is the arithmetic. Say a motor spins at 3,000 rpm and makes 0.5 N·m. Put a 50:1 reducer on it and the output spins at 60 rpm with up to 25 N·m, less whatever the gears lose as heat. At 80% efficiency you get 20 N·m. Stack two stages and the ratios multiply: 4:1 followed by 4:1 is 16:1.

Real

A reducer multiplies output torque by its ratio N and divides output speed by N, so power in equals power out times efficiency. Robot reducers run from about 6:1 (quasi-direct-drive legs) to 160:1 (harmonic drives in arms), and they're specified by ratio, rated and peak torque, backlash in arc-minutes, torsional stiffness in N·m per arc-minute, efficiency and life in hours.

ELI5

A bicycle in its lowest gear. Your legs spin round and round quickly, the wheel turns slowly, and you can climb a steep hill. The reducer is the robot's lowest gear, fixed in place, so a small fast motor can lift something heavy.

FIG 03.1Gear ratioSpur pair · 12 and 48 teeth
motor gear12 teeth, input joint gear, 48 teeth, output motor0.0 turns joint0.00 turns ratio4 : 1 speed÷ 4 torque× 4 48 ÷ 12 = 4
Claim: the joint gear turns once for every four motor turns, the opposite way, because it has four times the teeth; its torque is four times the motor's, minus friction. Watch the readouts: the joint count stays at one quarter of the motor count. Real joints need 6:1 to 160:1, which is why they use the compact mechanisms below instead of one giant gear.

A single spur pair would need a joint gear 160 times the diameter of the motor gear to reach 160:1. So robot joints use packed mechanisms that reach high ratios in a small, round, hollow space. More than 90% of rotary joint modules use one of two, harmonic or planetary estimate, with cycloidal reducers for heavy, shock-loaded joints and screws wherever a joint pushes in a straight line.

Harmonic drive: two teeth of difference

The harmonic drive, also called a strain-wave gear, gets a huge ratio from three parts and one trick. The circular spline is a rigid steel ring with teeth on the inside, bolted to the robot's frame. Inside it sits the flexspline, a thin steel cup with teeth on the outside and two fewer teeth than the ring. Inside the cup the motor spins the wave generator, an oval cam on a thin flexible bearing. The oval squeezes the cup into an ellipse, so the cup's teeth mesh with the ring only at the two ends of the long axis.

Turn the oval once and the mesh points travel all the way round the ring. Because the cup has two fewer teeth, after one lap it has fallen two teeth behind: it has turned backwards by 2 ÷ (cup teeth) of a revolution. A cup with 100 teeth in a 102-tooth ring gives 50:1. A cup with 160 teeth gives 80:1, and a 320-tooth cup gives 160:1, all in one flat stage. Because teeth are always engaged on both sides with preload from the oval, there is almost no play.

FIG 03.2Harmonic driveSection A-A · 40 and 42 teeth

Claim: the ratio is flexspline teeth ÷ (ring teeth − flexspline teeth), here 40 ÷ 2 = 20:1, and the output turns against the input. Watch one cup tooth: it creeps backwards one twentieth of a turn for every turn of the oval. Production units have 100 to 320 cup teeth for 50:1 to 160:1.

Real

Strain-wave gear: an elliptical wave generator elastically deforms a thin flexspline with Zf external teeth inside a rigid circular spline with Zf + 2 internal teeth. Ratio Zf ÷ 2, typically 50:1 to 160:1 and up to 320:1, near-zero backlash, high torque for its weight, hollow shaft possible. Weak points: the flexspline is fatigue-loaded twice per input turn, and the high ratio makes the joint hard to push by hand.

ELI5

Put a slightly smaller rubber band inside a bracelet and squash it into an oval with your fingers. Run your fingers round and round. The band touches the bracelet in two spots that chase each other, and every lap the band slips back a tiny bit. Hundreds of fast laps make one slow, strong turn.

That's why harmonic drives sit in arms, wrists and shoulders, where you want precise positioning in a small, light package. Optimus Gen 1 used 14 rotary actuators with harmonic-type reducers verified, and the typical humanoid rotary joint is a frameless motor, a harmonic reducer, a torque sensor and an encoder stacked around a hollow shaft (see Motors and joints). The value in the part sits in the hard pieces: the flexspline, the wave generator and final assembly and test are more than 70% of a harmonic reducer's unit cost estimate.

Planetary gearsets and quasi-direct drive

A planetary gearbox packs gears like a solar system. The motor turns the sun gear in the middle. Three or four planet gears mesh around it and also mesh with a ring gear that has teeth on the inside. Hold the ring still and the planets roll around the inside of it, carrying the planet carrier with them. The carrier is the output. With the ring fixed, the ratio is 1 + ring teeth ÷ sun teeth.

FIG 03.3Planetary gearsetRing fixed · sun in · carrier out
1 2 3 ring gear, fixed内齿圈 · 48 teeth planet × 3 on carrier行星轮 · 行星架 sun gear, input太阳轮 · 12 teeth sun0.0 turns carrier0.00 turns ratio5 : 1 = 1 + 48 ÷ 12
Claim: with the ring held still, the carrier turns at 1 ÷ (1 + 48 ÷ 12) = one fifth of the sun's speed, in the same direction, while each planet spins backwards on its own pin. The load is shared by three tooth contacts at once. One stage gives 3:1 to 10:1; joints that need more stack two stages.

One planetary stage gives 3:1 to 10:1 estimate. That low ratio is a feature. The joint stays easy to push from the outside, a property called backdrivability, so the motor current alone tells the controller how hard the leg is hitting the ground. That's the logic of quasi-direct drive: a big, flat, high-torque motor with a 6:1 to 10:1 planetary, used by Unitree and the MIT Cheetah lineage. You give up some torque density and gain a leg that absorbs impacts and senses force without a separate torque sensor.

Unitree's G1 shows what this costs at Chinese scale. Its small joint is a 4-in-1 unit (motor, planetary reducer, encoder, driver) around a hollow shaft; the planetary stage costs about CNY 300, the motor CNY 200 and the encoder CNY 200, and the whole small joint about CNY 1,000 (US$140) estimate. Unitree designs its own planetary tooth profile to survive leg shock verified, per its IPO prospectus.

Cycloidal and RV reducers: many teeth share the hit

A cycloidal drive replaces teeth with lobes. The input shaft carries an off-centre cam. The cam makes a wavy disc wobble in a small circle inside a ring of fixed pins. The disc has one fewer lobe than there are pins, so each full wobble walks it back by one lobe. Pins sticking through oversized holes in the disc pick up that slow rotation and ignore the wobble. With 10 lobes and 11 pins the ratio is 10:1, and it runs the opposite way to the input.

FIG 03.4Cycloidal driveSection · 10 lobes, 11 pins
Claim: each turn of the cam makes the disc wobble once around the pin ring and walks it back by one lobe, so 10 lobes in 11 pins give 10:1 with the output reversed. Unlike a spur gear, where one or two teeth carry the load, many lobes touch pins at once, which is why cycloidal units take shock. The drawing's cam turns 10 times for each output turn.

An RV reducer is a cycloidal drive with a planetary stage in front: the motor turns a small planetary set, which spins two or three crank shafts, which wobble two cycloid discs set half a wobble apart so they balance each other. It is heavy and expensive, and it is the standard at the base, shoulder and elbow of industrial arms, where one joint carries the whole arm plus payload. Nabtesco of Tokyo holds about 60% of RV reducers for medium and large industrial robots estimate, and Chinese RV makers supply more than 30% of the robots assembled in China estimate.

In humanoids, cycloidal units show up where the load is repetitive and heavy. Agility's Digit 5, unveiled 15 Sep 2026, reportedly revised its legs around cycloidal actuators for repeated lifting unverified. The industry report's summary rule holds as a first pass: harmonic for precise arms and hands, cycloidal for shock-loaded hips and knees, screws for straight-line thrust.

Screws: turning spin into a push

Some joints are easier to drive by pushing than by turning. A human knee works that way: a muscle pulls in a straight line across the joint. A linear actuator copies it. A motor turns a threaded shaft, a nut rides along the thread, and the nut pushes a rod that pushes the limb. One turn of the shaft moves the nut one lead, for example 5 mm. That is a reducer too: a small motor torque becomes a large straight-line force.

A ball screw puts steel balls between the shaft and the nut so they roll instead of sliding. A planetary roller screw replaces the balls with small threaded rollers that orbit the shaft like planets. Each roller touches both the shaft and the nut along many thread lines, where a ball touches at one point, so a roller screw carries 3 to 10 times the load of a ball screw the same size and survives shock estimate. That is why Tesla put 14 of them in Optimus verified, Boston Dynamics' electric Atlas reportedly uses them unverified, and Kepler's K2 mixes roller-screw linear actuators with rotary joints maker release.

FIG 03.5Ball screw and roller screwSection through nut · same lead
Ball screw滚珠丝杠 · balls touch at points push Planetary roller screw行星滚柱丝杠 · rollers touch along lines push 4 turns = 4 leads of travel motormotor
Claim: in both screws four motor turns slide the nut four leads, so rotation becomes a straight push at a fixed ratio. The difference is what carries that push: ten balls touching at points in the upper nut, two long threaded rollers (orange) touching along every thread in the lower nut. The section shows two rollers; real nuts carry several around the shaft.

Why the roller screw is the bottleneck

A roller screw is a few pieces of hardened steel with threads ground to a few microns. Three things make it slow to scale. The alloy: about 70% use titanium or chrome-moly steels, only about five foundries make aerospace-grade stock, and steel lead times run 6 to 9 months unverified. The machines: threads are finished on precision thread grinding machines, mostly imported, and grinding capacity is the rate limit. The know-how: heat treatment and tolerancing that incumbents built over decades. In 2023 roller screws were only 4% of China's CNY 25.7 billion screw market, and foreign makers held 85% of China's roller screw sales estimate.

The price depends on who is quoting it, and the gap between sources is large enough that it matters exactly what is being priced.

SourceWhat it saysPrice per screwConfidence

The likely reconciliation: the US dollar figures describe low-volume aerospace screws or whole actuators, and CNY 1,500 is a volume price for a screw alone estimate. Chinese capacity is now arriving in bulk. Wuzhou Xinchun is building for 980,000 roller screw sets plus 2.1 million micro ball screws; Beite plans 2.6 million sets a year in Kunshan plus 800,000 in Thailand; Hengli expects its screw line to exceed CNY 3 billion of output estimate. Against that, UBS projects about 30,000 humanoids shipped worldwide in 2026 estimate. Capacity running ahead of demand points to a price war in screws estimate, the same pattern harmonic reducers already show.

Belts, cables, tendons and linkages

Every kilogram at the end of a limb costs you twice: the motor has to lift it, and it swings like a hammer when the robot falls. So designers move motors up the limb toward the body and send the motion down with something light.

  • Timing belts are toothed rubber belts with steel or fibre cords. They carry rotation from a motor to a joint a short distance away, cheaply and quietly, with a small extra ratio from the pulley sizes. They stretch a little, so they add compliance and some position error.
  • Tendon drives pull joints with cables, like the tendons in your forearm that move your fingers. 1X builds NEO around tendon drive, which keeps its joints light, quiet and easy to push by hand; NEO weighs 30 kg verified. Optimus Gen 3's hand reportedly uses about 25 forearm actuators pulling tendons unverified. Cables stretch, fray and need tensioning, so they trade maintenance for lightness (see Hands and touch).
  • Linkages are rigid rods and levers. A motor mounted high on the thigh can drive the knee or ankle through a push rod, and two rods from calf-mounted motors can tilt an ankle in two directions. Agility's Digit inherits its backward-bending bird legs from the Cassie research robot verified, which came out of walking-physics research. Linkages are stiff and efficient, but the ratio changes as the joint moves, which the controller has to model.

Seven properties that decide the choice

No reducer wins on every axis. A joint sold as "better" is better on some of these seven and worse on others.

PropertyWhat it means and why you careas of Sep 2026
Backlash
Play between teeth, in arc-minutes. You feel it as a clunk when the joint reverses. It ruins precise positioning and makes force control jittery. Harmonic drives are near zero; cheap planetaries have the most.
Torsional stiffness
How much the output twists under load, in N·m per arc-minute. A soft joint wobbles when an arm holds something at full reach and makes balance control harder.
Backdrivability
Whether you can push the output and turn the motor. It lets a robot sense contact through motor current and give way when it bumps a person. Falls fast as the ratio rises.
Efficiency
Share of motor power that reaches the output. Every lost percent becomes heat in a packed joint and shortens battery runtime. Planetary stages are efficient and backdrivable; Apptronik claims 90%+ energy efficiency for its own actuators.
Reflected inertia
How heavy the spinning motor feels at the joint. It scales with the ratio squared, so it sets how hard an impact hits the gears.
Shock tolerance
What a fall or a foot strike does to the teeth. Cycloidal and roller screws share the load over many contacts; a thin flexspline is the weak point.
Life
Hours or cycles before wear, fatigue or grease breakdown ends it. Fanuc arms average 80,000+ hours between failures by one integrator's claim; humanoid joints have no public field data yet.

Reflected inertia deserves a picture, because it is the reason legged robots moved away from high ratios. A motor rotor spinning N times faster than the joint stores N² times more kinetic energy per unit of joint speed. When the foot hits the floor, the gear teeth have to stop that energy.

FIG 03.6Reflected inertia grows with ratio squaredSame motor, four ratios
6:1 planetary, QDD36 × 10:1 planetary100 × 50:1 harmonic2,500 × 100:1 harmonic10,000 × 05,000 × rotor inertia10,000 ×
Claim: the rotor feels N² times heavier at the joint, so going from a 10:1 planetary to a 100:1 harmonic makes the same motor feel 100 times heavier, which matches the "about 100 times lower" reflected inertia quoted for quasi-direct drive estimate. Bars grow to scale. This is arithmetic on the ratio alone; real rotors differ in size.

Real

Reflected inertia Jrefl = N² × Jrotor. At 100:1 a 10 g·cm² rotor behaves like 100,000 g·cm² at the output. Impact force during a foot strike, the bandwidth of force control and whether the joint can be backdriven all depend on it, which is why legs use 6:1 to 10:1 and arms tolerate 50:1 to 160:1.

ELI5

Try to stop a bicycle wheel that's spinning fast by grabbing the pedal in the lowest gear. The pedal barely moves, but it fights you hard because the wheel is spinning so much faster. A high-ratio joint has the same problem: a small spinning motor feels like a flywheel when the leg suddenly stops.

Who makes them and what they cost

For decades two Tokyo firms owned precision reducers: Harmonic Drive Systems (HDSI) in strain-wave gears and Nabtesco in RV. Together they still hold about 55 to 60% of global harmonic revenue estimate, and HDSI alone about 60% of the global harmonic market by one count estimate. Inside China the picture has flipped, and this is the clearest case of domestic substitution in the robot supply chain.

Two things are happening at once. Chinese harmonic reducers are 30 to 50% or 40 to 60% cheaper than Japanese ones, depending on the source contested, while HDSI's custom or micro units sell for CNY 7,000 to 8,000 estimate. And margins are falling as capacity floods in: Leaderdrive shipped about 500,000 units in 2025 with capacity approaching 1 million in 2026 estimate, its H1 2026 revenue grew 38.6% to CNY 349 million, but its operating cash flow was negative CNY 17 million verified. A reported "3.5 million units of locked orders for 2026" doesn't fit a 1 million unit capacity and is probably a translation or unit error contested.

One structural point matters for geopolitics. Magnets live in the motor, so reducers and screws are less exposed to rare-earth export controls than motors are. Their exposure is to precision steel, heat treatment and grinding machines. Integrated joint modules bundle both and inherit the magnet risk.

How transmissions fail

Gears don't fail at random. They wear in a few predictable ways, and the signs show up in data the robot already collects.

  • Flexspline fatigue. Every input turn bends every point of a harmonic drive's thin cup twice. A 100:1 joint doing one output turn flexes the cup 200 times. Over millions of cycles a crack starts at the tooth root, usually after shock loads or overheating. The joint then loses torque or skips a tooth.
  • Grease breakdown. Grease thins with heat, gets pushed out of the mesh and picks up wear particles. Fanuc's Zero Down Time service tracks grease change timing across more than 40,000 connected arms verified. Humanoid joints run hotter and are packed tighter, so expect shorter grease life.
  • Backlash growth. Worn teeth and bearings add play. You see it as a joint that overshoots, hunts around its target or clunks when it reverses. It creeps in slowly, so a fleet operator who logs position error per joint can see it long before a customer does.
  • Broken small gears from control software. A lab running reinforcement learning policies on a Unitree G1 reported a broken left wrist pitch gear after violent motions in unfamiliar states verified owner report. In humanoids, the controller causes a lot of the gear damage.
  • Roller screw wear and contamination. Dirt in the nut and lost lubrication pit the threads. Linear actuators sit in the legs, close to floor dust and water.
Key insight

On industrial arms, the failure that matters most is reducer wear, and the maker catches it from motor current. Fanuc's service analyses motor torque per axis and flags reducer abnormality "several weeks before actual failure"; it has more than 40,000 robots connected and more than 4,000 downtime cases prevented verified. The signal needs the robot's own torque stream, which the maker's cloud holds.

English中文 + pinyinELI5Real definition
Reducer减速器jiǎnsùqìThe robot's lowest bicycle gear, fixed in place. A small motor spins fast and weak; the reducer makes the joint turn slowly and push hard.A transmission between motor and joint that divides speed and multiplies torque by a fixed ratio. Robot reducers are harmonic (50:1 to 160:1), planetary (3:1 to 10:1 per stage), cycloidal or RV. About 36% of a rotary joint module's cost is the reducer (estimate, 2025).
Gear ratio减速比jiǎnsùbǐHow many times the motor turns for one turn of the joint. A 50:1 ratio means 50 motor turns make one slow, strong joint turn.Input speed divided by output speed. Output torque is roughly input torque times the ratio times efficiency. Stages multiply: 4:1 then 4:1 gives 16:1. Engineers quote it as 减速比 for reducers.
Harmonic drive谐波减速器xiébō jiǎnsùqìA squishy toothed cup inside a stiff toothed ring. An oval cam squeezes the cup round and round, and each lap it slips back two teeth, so a fast motor makes a slow, strong, precise joint.Strain-wave gear: an elliptical wave generator deforms a thin flexspline inside a rigid circular spline with two more teeth. Ratio = flexspline teeth ÷ 2, typically 50:1 to 160:1 (up to 320:1) in one stage with near-zero backlash. Used in arms, wrists and most humanoid rotary joints. HDSI (Tokyo) leads globally; Leaderdrive and Laifual lead in China.
Flexspline柔轮róulúnThe thin, bendy steel cup in a harmonic drive. It gets squashed into an oval twice every motor turn, so it's the part that wears out.The thin-walled, externally toothed steel cup of a strain-wave gear, usually the output. It has two fewer teeth than the circular spline and is elastically deformed by the wave generator; fatigue at the tooth root is its main failure mode.
Circular spline刚轮gānglúnThe stiff outer ring with teeth on the inside, bolted still, that the squishy cup rolls against. The rigid, internally toothed ring of a strain-wave gear, usually fixed to the housing, with two more teeth than the flexspline.
Wave generator波发生器bō fāshēngqìThe oval spinning cam in the middle of a harmonic drive. The motor turns it and it pushes the cup's teeth into the ring at two spots. The elliptical cam plus thin-section flexible ball bearing that forms the input of a strain-wave gear and deforms the flexspline into an ellipse.
Planetary gearbox行星减速器xíngxīng jiǎnsùqìGears arranged like a solar system: a sun in the middle, planets around it, and a ring outside. Small, strong and easy to push backwards.A gear stage with a central sun gear, three or four planet gears on a carrier and an internal ring gear. With the ring fixed the ratio is 1 + ring teeth ÷ sun teeth, 3:1 to 10:1 per stage, efficient and backdrivable. Used in quasi-direct-drive legs (Unitree) and as first stages.
Sun gear太阳轮tàiyánglúnThe small gear in the middle of a planetary set that the motor turns. The central external gear of a planetary set, usually the input.
Planet gear行星轮xíngxīnglúnThe gears that roll around the sun gear, like planets in orbit. The gears meshing with both sun and ring in a planetary set, mounted on pins in the carrier; three or four share the load.
Ring gear内齿圈nèichǐquānThe big outer ring with teeth on the inside that the planets roll against. The internal gear enclosing a planetary set, usually fixed to the housing. Engineers say 内齿圈 or 齿圈.
Planet carrier行星架xíngxīngjiàThe frame that holds the planet gears' axles. As the planets roll round, it turns slowly, and that's the output. The member carrying the planet pins; with the ring fixed it is the output, turning at sun speed ÷ (1 + ring ÷ sun).
RV reducerRV减速器RV jiǎnsùqìA heavy, super-strong gearbox made of a small planetary set feeding a wobbling-disc stage. It holds up the whole arm of a factory robot.Rotate-vector reducer: a planetary first stage drives crankshafts that wobble two cycloid discs against a pin ring. High ratio, stiffness and shock capacity; standard at the base, shoulder and elbow of industrial arms. Nabtesco holds about 60% of medium and large industrial robot RV supply (estimate).
Cycloidal drive摆线减速器bǎixiàn jiǎnsùqìA wavy disc that wobbles inside a ring of pins. Each wobble walks it back one bump, and lots of bumps share every push, so it survives hard knocks.A reducer in which an eccentric input makes a cycloidal disc with one fewer lobe than the surrounding pins orbit; ratio equals the lobe count, output reversed. Many lobes carry load at once, giving high shock tolerance for hips and knees.
Planetary roller screw行星滚柱丝杠xíngxīng gǔnzhù sīgàngA screw that turns spinning into pushing, with little threaded rollers between the shaft and the nut, so it can push very hard and take knocks.A rotary-to-linear screw in which threaded rollers orbit between a threaded shaft and nut, giving many contact lines and 3 to 10 times the load of a same-size ball screw. Used in humanoid linear actuators (14 in Optimus); about 64% of a linear actuator's cost (estimate). The hardest humanoid part to scale: special steel, thread grinding, heat treatment.
Ball screw滚珠丝杠gǔnzhū sīgàngA screw and nut with steel balls rolling between them, so a spinning motor can slide something smoothly in a straight line.A rotary-to-linear screw with recirculating balls between shaft and nut; efficient and precise, lower load and shock capacity than a roller screw. Micro ball screws drive many dexterous-hand fingers.
Backlash背隙bèixìThe little bit of wiggle between gear teeth. You feel it as a clunk when the joint changes direction.Lost motion between input and output when direction reverses, in arc-minutes. Near zero in harmonic drives; grows with wear and is a key health signal.
Torsional stiffness扭转刚度niǔzhuǎn gāngdùHow much a joint twists like a spring when you load it. Stiffer means less wobble when the arm holds something heavy.Output torque per unit of angular deflection with the input locked, in N·m per arc-minute. Low stiffness adds wobble and limits control bandwidth.
Reflected inertiaHow heavy the spinning motor feels from the joint's side. A higher gear ratio makes it feel much heavier, like a flywheel, so impacts hit harder.Motor rotor inertia seen at the output: N² × J_rotor for ratio N. At 100:1 it is 10,000 times the rotor's own inertia; quasi-direct drive keeps it about 100 times lower than harmonic joints (estimate).
Timing belt同步带tóngbùdàiA toothed rubber belt, like a bike chain made of rubber, that carries turning from a motor to a joint a little way off.A toothed belt with tensile cords that transmits rotation without slip between pulleys; lets designers move motor mass up a limb, adds some compliance.
Tendon drive腱绳驱动jiànshéng qūdòngCables that pull on joints like the tendons in your arm pull your fingers, so the motors can sit far away.Actuation through cables routed over pulleys from remote motors, as in 1X NEO and tendon-driven hands. Light, quiet and backdrivable; cables stretch, fray and need tensioning. Engineers also say 绳驱.
Linkage连杆liángǎnStiff rods and levers joined together, like the pedals and cranks of a bike, that carry motion from a motor to a joint.A mechanism of rigid links and pivots (push rods, four-bars) that transmits motion from a remote motor; stiff and efficient, with a ratio that varies over the joint's range. Common in ankles and in dexterous-hand fingers.
Domestic substitution国产替代guóchǎn tìdàiChina replacing parts it used to import with Chinese-made ones, usually at a much lower price. The policy and market shift toward Chinese-made components in place of imports. In harmonic reducers, Leaderdrive (27.5%) and Laifual (21.4%) outsold HDSI (4.4%) inside China in 2025 (estimate).
Grinding machine磨床móchuángA machine that shapes hard steel with a spinning abrasive wheel to within a few thousandths of a millimetre. Precision screws and gears are finished on them.A precision machine tool that finishes hardened parts with an abrasive wheel; thread and gear grinders set capacity and accuracy for roller screws and reducers, and high-end units are mostly imported. Thread grinder: 螺纹磨床.
EfficiencyHow much of the motor's effort actually reaches the joint. The rest turns into heat in the gears.Output power divided by input power for a transmission. Losses heat packed joints and cut battery runtime; efficiency usually falls as ratio rises.
